Eunice L. Black Smith, age 96, passed away Thursday, November 3, 2016 in Ogeechee Area Hospice.

Eunice was a native and lifelong resident of Statesboro and attended local schools. She and her late husband, Roscoe Cassedy, owned and operated Cassedy Paint and Upholstery Company for many years and she continued to operate the business after his death. Eunice joined Gracewood Baptist Church on February 28, 1986. The impact of her faith on her church family is significant. Over the years, her faithful and consistent attendance in Sunday school and in worship demonstrated her deep love for God and the church. As her mobility challenges increased, it took a very special effort motivated by a special kind of love for her to attend. She was never one to complain and when she spoke it was short and to the point, bathed in Godly wisdom that comes from a lifetime of closeness to God. She last attended Sunday school and church on September 4, 2016. With only a little assistance, she walked in under her power, was the first one present, as usual, and waited on her friends to join her. She will be profoundly missed but her spiritual legacy and testimony of faith will continue on.

In addition to being preceded in death by her first husband, Eunice was also preceded in death by her parents, Willie Robert and Elizabeth Segars Black and her second husband, James Rawdon Smith.

She is survived by her sister, Lucille Black Young of Newington; niece, Jan Tankersley and her husband, Hughie of Brooklet; step-daughter, Rita Jackson and her husband, Jim of Florida; step-son, James "Jim" Edward Smith of Tennessee; step-grandson, Paul Gabrysiak of Colorado and many other nieces and nephews.
